Our History

Over 80 Years of Excellence in Youth Development

A Legacy Since 1942

177 Squadron was originally formed as #177 (Seven Oaks) Squadron on October 19, 1942, during the height of World War II This was a time when Canada recognized the critical need to train young people for potential service in the Royal Canadian Air Force, and air cadet squadrons were established across the country to meet this vital national objective .

The squadron's name evolved over the decades, reflecting its partnerships with Canadian aviation leaders. It was later renamed #177 (Trans Canada Airlines) Squadron and subsequently became #177 (Air Canada) Squadron, honoring the legacy of Canada's flagship airline . Today, we proudly operate as 177 Winnipeg Squadron, continuing our mission to develop citizenship, leadership, and physical fitness in Manitoba's youth.

The Air Cadet Movement in Canada

The Royal Canadian Air Cadets program was officially established in 1941 when the Air Cadet League of Canada was formed through Order-in-Council PC 6647 on November 11, 1940 . By 1942, there were 135 squadrons with 10,000 cadets across Canada. The program reached its wartime peak in 1944 with 29,000 cadets in 374 squadrons.

Today, the focus has shifted from wartime preparation to developing well-rounded citizens through aviation training, leadership development, physical fitness, and community service. 177 Squadron proudly carries forward this tradition as part of the Air Cadet League of Canada, a registered charitable organization dedicated to youth development.
